According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, “<a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/body-mass-index" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">BMI</a>&nbsp;is defined as weight in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/kilogram" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">kilograms</a>&nbsp;divided by the square of the height in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/metre-measurement" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">metres</a>.” The number, however, is not a direct measure of body fat, and&nbsp;<a class="external" target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://nutritionalassessment.mumc.nl/en/skinfold-measurements#:~:text=A%20skinfold%20caliper%20is%20used,a%20measure%20for%20subcutaneous%20fat." data-show-preview="true">skinfold calipers</a> can offer a more accurate measurement. As journalist Keith Devlin notes, BMI “makes no allowance for the relative proportions of bone, muscle and fat in the body. But bone is denser than muscle and twice as dense as fat, so a person with strong bones, good muscle tone and low fat will have a high BMI. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Centers-for-Disease-Control-and-Prevention" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>&nbsp;(CDC) first collected data on weight from each U.S. state individually in 1994 when the obesity rate was 19% or lower in each state. As of 2022, the most recent CDC data available, all U.S. states and territories had an obesity rate over 25%. During the Covid pandemic, the U.S. obesity rate rose by 3% between March 2020 and March 2021. Both the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) calculated the national American adult obesity rate as 41.9% in 2022, the most recent data available.&nbsp;<a href="/procon/obesity-debate#pcref-2256752-8">[8]</a><a href="/procon/obesity-debate#pcref-2256752-9">[9]</a><a href="/procon/obesity-debate#pcref-2256752-10">[10]</a><a href="/procon/obesity-debate#pcref-2256752-11">[11]</a><a href="/procon/obesity-debate#pcref-2256752-12">[12]</a></p><!--[MOD10]--><span class="marker MOD10 mod-inline"></span><!--[PREMOD11]--><span class="marker PREMOD11 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">Obesity rates also differ among different groups. According to the CDC in 2024, Black adults had the highest obesity rates (49.9%) followed by Hispanic (45.6%), White (41.4%), and Asian (16.1%) adults. Rural areas also had higher obesity rates than urban and suburban areas.
